Woodlands Community Primary school, in Upper Cwmbran, is the first after school coding club to get going in this Torfaen cluster of clubs, supported by Communities First, The Digital Volunteers CIC, Code Club and StemAmbassadors.
The club kicked off at the end of February 2015 and has about 15 pupils from mostly Year 5 and 6 who attend on a Friday from 3.15pm until 4.30pm. We have one regular volunteer but are always on the look out for others to support this school.
At the moment they are working through Code Clubs teaching resources which teaches children how to use Scratch. Scratch is a code which uses drop and drag commands and was developed for 7 to 11 year olds by some clever people at MIT.
As well as Scratch, we aim to learn Python, j2e (a code similar to scratch), programme robots with Lego WeDo and Mindstorms, Raspberry Pi, Codea, Hopscotch and MinecraftEdu. We use resources such as kidscodecs.com and MagPi to find out what other volunteers are teaching in other clubs around the UK.
