Volunteering with The Digital Volunteers is a collaborative experience as we partner closely with our friends at Communities First, Code Club UK and STEMNET.
Our volunteering opportunities have been hugely popular. For example the children attending after school coding clubs love the chance to gain genuine new skills from skilled volunteers. The teachers also value volunteers because they allow for activities that compliment the school curriculum and even offer teachers the chance to learn new skills too. And lastly but by no means least, the volunteer gain employability skills that help them progress their careers.
Because our mission is to focus on deprived areas in inner cities, rural areas or old industrial heartlands, The Digital Volunteers has digital educators who launch clubs whilst skilled volunteers are being recruited. Ideally, volunteers work in pairs and they can be computer science under graduates, A’level and GCSE students and we don’t turn away more mature volunteers. Everyone is welcome as long as they have a DBS check and are confident enough to work with people.
Estyn, the Welsh schools inspectorate, has endorsed similar activities that use partnership work to provide sustainable intervention to improve the attainment of children living in deprived areas. Two of our schools have been deemed ‘Excellent’ by Estyn as a result of their investment in improving digital competence.
