Everyday there are more opportunities to give back.  Here at The Digital Volunteers we use technology savvy individuals who volunteer their time in digital inclusion and digital learning activities in the community. A project we are starting is a cluster of after school coding clubs in the Torfaen area.

Children are the future, and who would not want to give them the opportunity to develop their digital skills for a digital future.

The Communities First team in Torfaen and The Digital Volunteers want to give children the opportunity to play with Raspberri Pi’s (micro computers) and Lego Mindstorms and WeDo (robotics) and learn how to code using this equipment. Expert volunteers are on hand teaching them languages such as Scratch, Python, javascript and HTML.

The Digital Volunteers is a Community Interest Company and, together with partners Communities First, Code Club and STEM Ambassadors, are supporting young people in such activities and promotes the benefits of volunteering digital skills in the community. We particularly want to encourage 13-24 year olds to take their digital skills out of the bedroom and into the community. This is already happening, for example, we have Secondary school pupils helping out and volunteering their digital skills in Primary after school coding clubs.

Here’s the caveat, to carry out our activity we need help and your support, whether you’re a parent anxious about their kids spending too much time on the computer, or geeks who just love everything tech. We have made a bid to get funding in this year’s Aviva Community Fund. The money is needed to help the young digital volunteers develop their own community website, developing web design and build skills in the process. So please help by clicking on this link and voting for our project.

You have 10 votes and we’d be very happy if you give them all to our project! Many thanks in advance for your support and please pass this message on to any colleagues and friends who may also be willing to vote for this local project so that we can make a difference to the lives of young people in our community.
If you have any members of staff who would like to volunteer some of their time and digital skills please find out more at www.thedigitalvolunteers.org.uk.
